IEEE 1686-2007, Security for Intelligent Electronic Devices, establishes a minimum set of requirements for tools and features to allow a user to implement an intelligent electronic device security effort in accordance with NERC Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) requirements. This standard defines the functions and features to be provided in substation Intelligent Electronic Devices to accommodate critical infrastructure protection programs. IEEE 1686-2007 introduces a Table of Compliance, which vendors and other suppliers that claim to comply with the 1686 standard must generate to indicate a "level of compliance" with the requirements in every numbered paragraph.
